My Son Sanctuary
My Son Sanctuary is located in Duy Phu Commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province, about 40 kilometers from Hoi An. It is an ancient complex of temple towers built by the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. Nestled in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains, the site exudes a sacred and mysterious atmosphere. My Son was once a vital religious and political center of the ancient Cham people. Most of the temples here are dedicated to Shiva, the supreme god in Hinduism.
The architecture of My Son stands out with its fired brick structures, remarkably bonded without mortar—a technique that remains a mystery today. The carvings on stone and brick reflect the refined artistic skills of the ancient Cham civilization. The towers were built following Hindu cosmology and are heavily influenced by Indian architectural styles. Although time and war have damaged many structures, the site still retains its ancient and mystical charm. My Son is not just a relic but also a testament to a once-glorious civilization.
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1999, My Son affirms its historical, artistic, and architectural significance. Today, it is a captivating destination for those interested in archaeology, history, and Eastern culture. Many tours from Hoi An and Da Nang include morning visits to My Son, often combined with traditional Cham dance performances. The peaceful and solemn atmosphere makes each visit a deeply memorable experience. My Son Sanctuary is a cultural treasure of Vietnam and humanity
