Tra Su Cajuput Forest
Location:
Tra Su Cajuput Forest lies in Van Giao Commune, Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province, just over 20 km from Chau Doc City and about 10 km from the Cambodian border. It’s approximately 210 km from Ho Chi Minh City, a scenic drive of about 5 hours.
Highlights:
This captivating ecological preserve spans 845 hectares of protected forest, surrounded by a 645-hectare buffer zone. It’s a thriving habitat for diverse colonies of water birds, bats, and an array of rare and endangered animals and reptiles.
A visit to Tra Su invites you to board a motorboat for a leisurely two-hour tour through the tranquil waterways, gliding beneath cajuput trees draped in greenery. Along the way, you’ll soak in the peaceful scenery, breathe the crisp, fresh air, and enjoy the natural symphony created by chirping birds and rustling leaves.
One of the forest’s standout features is the ornithologist’s watchtower, rising 10 meters above the canopy. From here, visitors are treated to a panoramic view of the endless green expanse, speckled with flocks of birds and framed by the silhouette of Cam Mountain in the distance.
The waterways themselves shift in color — sometimes turquoise, silver, or amber — depending on the light and the variety of aquatic life beneath the surface. During the flood season, the canals become a lush tapestry of water ferns, lotus flowers, and water lilies, creating a magical landscape especially enchanting at sunset, when the emerald duckweed glows golden and birds crowd the sky in a spectacular display.
Scattered amid the forest are simple stilted farmhouses, their thatched roofs woven from cajuput bark, adding a rustic charm to this serene wilderness. As evening falls, the forest comes alive with the sounds of nocturnal wildlife, offering a truly immersive experience in nature’s embrace.
Best Time to Visit:
The ideal time to experience Tra Su is during the high-water season, from September to November, when the entire area transforms into a floating forest, with its waterways and canals at their most lush and beautiful.
