Notre Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, officially known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, is located in the heart of District 1. Built by the French in 1877, the church features classic Roman and Gothic architectural styles. It stands as one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most iconic landmarks and the largest Catholic center in the city. Despite over a century of history, the cathedral retains its timeless beauty amidst the modern urban landscape.
Inside is a spacious sanctuary that can accommodate up to 1,200 visitors. The layout includes three main aisles and two side chapels, with a vaulted roof reaching 21 meters high. The two bell towers rise to 57 meters and house six large bells representing six musical tones. The design showcases a harmonious blend of structural engineering and Western artistry.
The altars are carved from solid marble, with intricate details and refined craftsmanship. Stained-glass windows 56 in total—create a radiant play of light and color. Every element reflects the solemn and elegant qualities of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The overall atmosphere inside the cathedral is sacred and serene.
In front of the cathedral is a small park featuring the statue of Our Lady of Peace, a notable spiritual symbol. The statue stands 4.6 meters tall, made of white Italian marble, and depicts the Virgin Mary holding a globe with a cross. Her upward gaze evokes a prayer for peace in Vietnam. This peaceful setting attracts both locals and tourists for reflection and sightseeing.
